The country of Chile in South America is a land of extremes that experiences high tropical heat in its one part, chilled icy atmosphere in another, and the driest sandy desert in the other region. With this diverse weather, the range of tourist’s activities in Chile is also varied and long. Glance at the snow peaks, trek the Andean mountains, climb an active volcano, explore the old forests of Parque Nacional Chiloe, stroll around the shining lakes, dip in hot springs, and trip to the fine maze of fjords, islands, and milky-blue glaciers in Chile. Besides these, you can become a bit brave for skiing, surfing, swimming, kayaking, horseback riding, and paragliding at Chile.

If you are tired of natural wonders, explore some cultural and archaeological sites in the contemporary cities including the capital. What more one wants besides these inspiring, but never disappointing tourist scores?

Chile Tourist Attractions

Santiago

This is the capital of Chile that sits amidst the beautiful settings – ring of mountains throng with adventurous activities, snowy Andean peaks in east, and a coast on west. All this is visible on a clear day, which is sadly rare. But, be patient and you will bear the sweet fruits. Here, we visited the following places in Chile.

  • Basílica del Salvador:
    Built in 1892, this is a neo-Gothic landmark in Barrio Brasil that was once damaged by the earthquake. However, it remains closed frequently and is open only on certain events.

  • Catedral Metropolitana:
    This is the neoclassical cathedral that earns the credit of standing strongly in comparison of other structures that have collapsed or in state of so. The main attraction here is the rich ornate altar.

  • Cementerio General:
    Surprisingly, this is the most under-explored site despite the fact that is the most interesting one. It is a small town of resting political personalities in their burial chambers. Some of them are amazingly elaborate and lavish; while some are inspiring and bizarre. Some of the famous figures buried here include Salvador Allende, diplomat Orlando Letelier, and Jose Manuel Balmaceda.
  • Cerro Santa Lucia:
    Previously a rugged hill, this wonderful park is the effort of the city mayor Benjamín Vicuna Mackenna of the 19th century. It will make you feel really good with its footpaths and fountains.
  • Jardín Zoológico:
    This zoo is the home of an aging group of abandoned animals and it is only here in the entire country where you can easily spot the mysterious pudu deer.
  • Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino:
    This is a well-organized museum that offers 4500 years old pre-Columbian civilization’s collection. Here, you can see different displays of various local cultures along with splendid figurative ceramics, intricate textiles, and jewelry. Do not miss to view the Chinchorro mummies, a unique item of Chile’s local culture and are quite older if compared to the Egyptian counterpart.
  • Museo de Arte Contemporaneo:
    This museum offers contemporary collection of photography, design, sculpture, and web art.

  • Museo de Artes Visuales:
    Here, you will get to see superb modern Chilean engravings, sculptures, paintings, and photography along with the rotating exhibits of famous modern Chilean artists such as Roberto Matta.
  • Museo de Ciencia y Tecnologia:
    This museum boasts interactive displays of astronomy, geology, and other facets of science and technology. At the core of Parque Quinta Normal, a man-made lagoon offers rented rowboats behind which this museum is located.
  • Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende:
    This museum beholds the art era of 1970s along with the gifts from those artists who were with the socialist Allende government. Here, the highlights are works by Matta, Miró, Tapies, Calder and Yoko Ono, and geometric art.
  • Museo De Santiago:
    Located in the colonial Casa Colorada, this is an unprofessional museum offering quite indulging collections indicating the capital’s growth. Displays here are maps, paintings, colonial wear, and dioramas. Spanish tours are also on hand.
  • Museo Histórico Nacional:
    This museum displays elaborate ecclesiastic items, early colonial furniture, weapons, and personal belongings of the nation’s liberation heroes. Do not miss to visit a small room holding Mapuche jewelry and artifacts.

  • Museo La Merced:
    With a beautiful courtyard and café, this is a museum deserving each tourist’s visit offering the exhibits of the Merced religious order in the country.
  • Museo Nacional de Historia Natural:
    This is a grimy museum boasting a vast collection of butterflies and fossils including the bone remains of the huge Pleistocene called the ‘milodon’ of the popular cave near Puerto Natales in southern Chile. Here, you will find all types of people right from walkers, picnickers, soccer kickers, and teachers.
  • Palacio Cousino:
    This magnificent palace is of the Portuguese origin. The famous Cousino-Goyenechea family collected enormous riches from wine-making and coal and silver mining to construct this palace. Therefore, this is the most superb house belonging to the period of 1871. It is adorned with French-style work and holds one of the first lifts in the country. You can also take a guide for the English tour.

  • Palacio de la Moneda:
    This is the country’s presidential palace in whose name La Moneda means ‘the coin’. Planned by the Italian architect, Joaquín Toesca at the end of the 18th century, this marvel later became the presidential dwelling in 1846 A.D. In 1973, this palace was damaged via air force strikes after which it was rejuvenated holding the presidential offices. Today, the head of state do not stay here.

  • Parque de Las Esculturas Exhibition Hall:
    This hall holds interesting sculptures of remarkable national artists. However, there is a full possibility of the exhibits being temporary and that the timings keep changing on the basis of the exhibition. Ringing this exhibition hall, a wonderful green landscape by the river Mapocho is simply scenic. This is precisely the place to have a leisure cool walk.
  • Parque Metropolitano:
    Located in the central Santiago, this is the largest open space in the city that allures cyclists, joggers, and walkers. Here, you can marvel at the iconic 14 m tall statue of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción located at the top of Cerro San Cristóbal. You can come here via the funicular railway, teleférico (aerial tram), bus, car, or foot to have the stunning views, enjoy in the gardens, stroll around the swimming pools, visit a zoo, and be excited though a teleférico ride of 2 km long.
  • Piscina Tupahue:
    Located on the San Cristobal hill in the Parque Metropolitano, this holds one of the biggest swimming pool environs that cannot be found else where. From here, you can have spectacular scenery across Santiago.

    During the period between early agricultural settlements and to the late pre-Hispanic period, northern Chile was a region of Andean culture that was influenced by altiplano traditions spreading to the coastal valleys of the north.

    While southern regions were areas of Mapuche cultural activities.

    Through the colonial period following the conquest, and during the early Republican period, the country’s culture was dominated by the Spanish.

    German migrants influenced the Bavarian style rural architecture and cuisine in the south of Chile.
