Welcome to the Saba Island of Adam and Eve

Filed under : Caribbean Travel Guide

We all know that Adam and Eve lived in a great garden and were allowed in this calm lush area until they digested a fruit of a specific tree. On breaking this condition, the consequences were ruining, but one can yet explore this paradise now as a sharp volcano peak named Saba.

Sitting in the uneven volcanic landscape, the island’s uniform white-green-brown design adorns the innate region. The island of Saba is located at a distance of 28 miles from St. Maarten, both forming a part of the Windward Islands of the Dutch Caribbean. Not only you can enjoy sights on the land, but can also have a breathtaking diving tour under the water to explore its vivid empire of corals, reefs, and marine life such as turtles, sharks, and fishes. These diving opportunities are among the best scuba sites on the planet designated as national marine park.

Although it is an island, there is very little reserved in the list of beaches due to rugged outcrop and cliffs. Sad to know that is just one beach, but happy enough to know that they form a wonderful experience masking the sad point of just one beach.

Prime Attractions

  • Mount Scenery:
This is the major visited site who obtained its name from the green huge ferns, colorful wild orchids, and flowers. Located nearby Windwardside, grab the opportunity of hiking 1,064 steps, but carry a sweater or a thick wear to protect from the chilled air. You can also spot various species such as snakes, lizards, frogs, and tropical animals along with some extinct birds such as the quail dove and the purple-throated humming bird.
  • Well’s Beach:
Located along the stretch of dark sand, this beach is where you can try out for diving or snorkeling.
  • The Harry L. Johnson Memorial Museum:
Located in Windwardside, this museum helps one to know about some important details of the island. Once the home of a Saban seaman in the 19th century, it now holds the collections of historical relics. It is opened from Monday through Friday – 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The admission fee is $2.
  • Windwardside:
Located at 1,968 feet on the ridge of two ravines, this second largest village and the midpoint of the island provides some magnificent Caribbean views. Stroll on the sprawling streets making a way by passing through the hills and series of small mansions and shops along with the oleander bushes. Then, at the northern end, head for the Church of St. Paul’s Conversion, a colonial structure holding a red and white tower, and the Saba Tourist Office down ways that arranges many tours.
  • Hell’s Gate:
This is another scenic village on the mountain’s edge that is accessible from Windwardside by trekking the sheer rock steps. On the serpentine road that goes to airport from here, do visit the largest church on the island.
  • A Roller-Coaster Road:
This is the unmatched 31 km road on the Caribbean where a visit is a must to complete your trip. A gift of a local’s hope, this road was planned by Josephus Lambert Hassell when he studied a corresponding engineering course in 1930s. This was later implemented by his followers on the island that completed in 1950s approximately.
  • This firmness was an answer to all those engineers who were of the opinion that no road can built on this volcanic area. Today, to curved road finds it away from the little airport, to the sheer hills, and finally to the verdant green land. However, the Road is rebuilt recently, but the excitement stays the same for any visitor. Windwardside is located atop The Road stands at 541 m.
  • Saba Marine Park:
This covers almost the complete island along with four offshore underwater mountains called seamounts. This park at Fort Bay is aimed at conserving all the marine life and corals in its different zones each with a unique purpose. The general leisure zone encompasses the Well’s Bay Beach that can be visited only in spring; whereas the two dock zones are for yachts and the harbor. There are total five dive zones covering a coastal region and four seamounts offshore along with the marked snorkeling trail. Shake hands with corals, sponges, parrotfish, doctorfish, and damselfish.
  • The Snorkel Trail:
If you are a beginner, avoid this trail that is easily accessible from the Well’s Bay Beach only from May to October. The depth is over 450 m between the island and the seamounts. For each time you want to dive, you need to pay $3. The park office is opened at Fort Bay from Monday to Friday between 8 am to 4 pm, on Saturday from 8 am to noon, and Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. For this sport, a decompression chamber is available at the Fort Bay harbor.
  • Saba Deep Dive Center:
Located at Fort Bay, this provides scuba diving, snorkeling, renting equipments, repairs, and tank fills. Opened from 8 am to 5 pm, the friendly coach, Mike Myers and his NAUI and PADI staff mentors along with dive masters are simply amazing in serving the enthusiasts. Fees are $450 for a certification course, $45 for a single-tank dive, $80 for a two-tank dive, and $75 for a night dive. Nearby, you can also some shopping in the Deep Boutique offering various clothes, swimwear, lotions, and sunglasses.
  • Crispeen Track:
This has made its place among the favorite treks of the visitors offering a few most comprehensive views of the island. It is accessible from Windwardside where the main road goes down to the St. John’s village and then heading towards northeast passing via a narrow, spectacular gorge adorned in tropical plants. As you go ahead, the vegetation appears more greener and thick including the banana and citrus fields. Then, when you reach the upper area of the Rendezvous region in an hour, the cultivated fields tend to disappear and a rainforest-like surroundings begin the journey along flora such as philodendron, anthurium, and the wild mammee.

The population of Saba consists of only 1,424 people who come from all over the world. The island’s small size has led to a fairly small number of island families, who can trace their last names back to around a half-dozen families.

This means that many last names are shared around the island, the most numerous being Hassell and Johnson. Most families are a rich intermixing of Dutch, Scottish, and African heritage.

Saba is slated to become a special municipality within the country of the Netherlands, and currently the schedule for this transition has been set for October 10th, 2010.
