Thanks to all those first time comers in the past who came on the beautiful land of Uruguay and spread their experiences about this superb holiday destination. The immaculate Uruguay beaches, impressive Uruguay vibrant cities, the river towns, cultural museums, historic palaces, and much additions add to the glory of the nation and are quite capable of attracting more and more tourists each year by mouth-to-mouth advertising. Ah! This is the best way to earn more fame and name for any country. Mostly, among the tourists, Argentines, Brazilians, Chileans, and non–South Americans can be seen in Uruguay.

Uruguay Tourist Attractions

Montevideo
This is largest and capital city of Uruguay with vivid cultural life. Covering 20 km of the land from east to west, the city is an industrial port and residential hub due to its suburbs. Here, you will find art deco and neoclassical buildings lying alongside dusty skyscrapers, while the shopping malls and contemporary beach communities such as Punta Carretas and Pocitos remind you of Miami. In Ciudad Vieja that is core of historic Montevideo, you will see ancient buildings in the stage of construction for making space for cafés, hostels, and galleries.

  • Casa Garibaldi:
This is the former residence of Guiseppe Garibaldi, the 19th century Italian nationalist hero who was exiled for several years in the capital after a rebellion with the monarchy.
  • Casa Rivera:
Located in the National Historical Museum that houses many detached Ciudad Vieja houses, this is one such master piece of the 19th century. The Casa Rivera was once the residence of the first president of the nation and initiator of the Colorado Party, Fructuoso Rivera. Here, you can view some collections of paintings, documents, furniture, and artifacts that inform you about the Uruguayan history right from the local origins to the era of independence.
  • Mausoleo de Artigas:
Located in the heart of the downtown Plaza Independencia, this museum’s onground area is adorned with a 17 m, 30-ton statue of the independence star of the country. There is a honor guard is always there for 24 hours to keep an eye on the Artigas’ collection.

  • Mercado del Puerto:
Located at the base of Perez Castellano, this is the city’s old port market building that must form a part of your to-visit list. The wrought-iron structure happily provides shade to a horde of rich and cheap parrillas (steak restaurants). I recommend to come here specifically on Saturday afternoons when this place becomes energetic and colorful because of the presence of artists, craftspeople, and street musicians of the city.
  • Museo Romántico:
This is the 18th century museum boasting a collection of paintings and antique furniture. The museum is located in the National Historical Museum that is famous for its myriad of detached Ciudad Vieja houses.
  • Museo Torres García:
This is another interesting museum that provides you with some exhibits of 20th century work of the nation’s painter Torres García along with some revolving displays hosting works of other modern artists.
  • Palacio Estevez:
This is the 18th century mansion in the city located on the south of the Plaza Independencia. Until 1985, the structure was the dwelling place of the government known as the Government House.

  • Palacio Salvo:
Located on the east of the Plaza Independencia, this is the last tallest structure in the continent inaugurated in 1927 with 26 storeys.
  • Plaza Independencia:
Located at the core of Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja – the old city, this is a wide square dotted with palms and governed by a big statue of Jose Artigas, the nation’s best idol. If you wish to, you can revere Artigas by reaching until his underground crypt below the statue.

  • Teatro Solís:
Located off the Plaza Independencia, this is a pleasing and prime performance area of the city. Initially inaugurated in 1856, its main feature for the tourists is its incredible acoustics that is not worth missing. It was remodeled in the past decade.

  • If you do not want to attend any performances but only want to see its space, do catch a regular scheduled tour taking place on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Uruguay has an impressive legacy of artistic and literary traditions, especially for its small size.

The contribution of its alternating conquerors and diverse immigrants has resulted in native traditions that integrate this diversity.

Uruguay has centuries old remains, fortresses of the colonial era. Its cities have a rich architectural heritage and an impressive number of writers, artists, and musicians.
