Hopping around Marylands vineyards

When you are out on a warm summer evening , and with around one thousand people around you ,  all at the lawns  which are at Boordy vineyard  which is in Hydes, the food , tucked into picnics and the many little tiny children running around all free. The couples and the singles both who come here and dance on he floor to a major swing band who usually play the gold old classic numbers. Although the reason most of this was was actually here in the first place is mostly because of the wine.

Boordy  is a vineyard which is on  two hundred and forty acre farm. This place is about half an hour from Baltimore.   Before this place was a vineyard , it used to be  a dairy and cattle farm for almost close to two centuries.  The many tasting rooms which are here is where the cows  were actually lined up to be milked.

Now these rooms are lined with wine patrons who want to sample the many choices of the vineyard.

The wine that is offered here is pretty amazing. most of the crowd here spends its Saturday night at the Boordy , just tasting the different kinds and flavors of wine and getting the essence of the fastest growing wine scene in all of Maryland.

The Boordy was opened in niteen sixty two. And after that , as the decades followed, around five more started as well. today there are thirty nice wineries in all.  three are ready to open this fall and about twelve are planned to open next year.

This is essentially a homegrown industry that has a  lot to offer  and gives the everyday people a chance to experience the different varieties of wine.

Maryland has officially six wine trails. These trails cover five different micro climates.  There are the ones which are more humid and there are the drier area. The humid areas are near the inland  and the drier area is more close to the Chesapeake Bay.  This place is located on the same latitude as Bordeaux. There are parts of this place which have rock soil which is similar to the soil that is available for wine production.

The wineries are anything from a new building that has just done being built to large waterfront estates. While you are on your trip, you should  go and check out the Frederick, Carroll and Piedmont wine trails. This place is just a  short while away from either Washington and Baltimore.

It would be a good idea if you were to stop first at the Elk run vineyards , which is essentially a thirty year old winery which lies essentially on the Frederick trail. The approach here is quite hands on.  The owner, Fred Wilson, spends most of his  time walking  through different wine tastings. The chardonnay is particularly good over here. Fred Wilson talks about how he maintains his grapes and keeps the freshness inside.

The wineries here are quite small in size . the the number of blends that this place has is just amazing. the wine and produce of a particular area adds to the personality of the wine.  In fact the Maryland wine makers seem to try different kinds of grapes  right from the Italian Sangiovese to the Seyval Blanc Hydrid.

This is primarily done for the sake of insurance.  Making wine in Maryland , which is on the eastern seaboard , brings in a lot of moisture. This is why there is possibility of fungal diseases. That means that more types of grapes are available , the lesser would be the chance of all of them getting infected with the diseases. Getting in different varieties of wines also serves the other obvious purpose of having a larger and more dynamic variety of wine. The vineyard elk run has about nineteen varieties of wines. The other wineries have an average of around six different types of wines.
